#1 Target Your Audience
Go to stations whose listeners will be interested in your Activity. If you are planning an event that appeals to teenagers, choose a Rock Station over a Big Bands or Classical format for coverage. Call about the format.
#2 The Easier You Make It For The Radio Station, The More Likely You Will Get On The Air.
Send a clear, concise fact sheet. Submit the basic “Who,” “What,” “When,” “Where” and “Why” information along with the name and telephone number of the contact person. Start and stop dates for airing are helpful. Include your Nonprofit I.D. number, if you have one. Pronunciations are important. Keep it to one page if possible. A pre-recorded air-quality :30 or :60 second announcement with script saves steps!
#3 Submit Your Request and Information Cleanly Typewritten
Do not phone in your public service information. It won’t air. Take time to type it up. See #2.
#4 Submit Your Information 2 Weeks In Advance
Stations can receive more than 200 requests for public service time each week. It takes time to format, produce and schedule announcements. Plan ahead to best assure a slot. Emergency requests are rarely granted.
#5 Ask If There Is An Opportunity To Appear On The Station’s Public Affairs Show.
All commercial radio stations in the United States are required to air public service programming. A guest appearance gives you additional publicity and gets your foot in the door with the Public Service Director.
#6 Know The Difference Between A “Public Service Announcement” And A “Commercial.”
A public service announcement is on behalf of a not-for-profit organization. An announcement about a sale at a store with a portion of the proceeds going to a non-profit organization is a commercial.
#7 Don’t Expect A Radio Station To Promote An Event Sponsored By Another Station.
#8 Be Polite About Your Requests And Ask What The Station Is Able To Do For You.
Do not ever demand anything from the station. Cooperate with the radio station and your results will be better.
#9 The Radio Station Is A Business Whose Goal Is To Turn A Profit While Serving The Listeners In The Target Audience.
Stations are happy to provide public service announcements about organizations and events that appeal to their audience but the priority is business first!
#10 Be Creative
Radio stations want to be involved in events that make them look good and interest their listeners. Find the angle of your event that will appeal to the station then go for it.
